WADA to review cannabis ban for athletes

(FILEWHOPPER)An advisory team from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) will review whether marijuana should be a banned substance, after American track and field star Shakari Richardson missed a positive test for the Tokyo Games.

The scientific review will begin next year, Wada said on Tuesday. Cannabis competition is currently banned and will continue in 2022.

Richardson tested positive for a chemical found in cannabis during a U.S. Olympic track and field trial in June, which erased his test results. He was also given a one-month suspension.

The 21-year-old, who was seen as the top competitor in the 100 meters, said he used cannabis to help fight his mother's death.

The ban has sparked outrage and called for a review of anti-doping regulations, including the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.
